‘I couldn’t understand’: Ashley Young gives his thoughts on Man United’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku

‘I couldn’t understand’: Ashley Young gives his thoughts on Man United’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku

Man United need a striker

Even if Edinson Cavani opts to remain at Manchester United beyond the summer, it is still clear that the Red Devils are in need of reinforcements up top.

Cavani, whilst undoubtedly a top striker, is 34 years of age, and has already proven that he can no longer play 90 minutes two to three times a week on a consistent basis.

This leaves Man United with Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as alternative centre-forward options.

However, the former has long showcased that he does not possess the goalscoring instincts of a player like Cavani, whilst Greenwood is still relatively green, and should not yet be relied upon by a club like United – who should be challenging for the Premier League – as a key source of goals.

‘I couldn’t understand’

So, signing a new striker should be amongst the Red Devils’ priorities over the course of the next year.

One player who, had he not already played for the club, would no doubt be near the top of their centre-forward target list, meanwhile, is Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku made the move to Inter Milan in August of 2019, for a fee believed to be around £66m.

And, since joining Antonio Conte’s side, the Belgian has cemented a name for himself as one of the top strikers in Europe.

Last season saw the 27-year-old net 34 and provide six assists across 51 outings, whilst he has since managed 27 goals and nine assists in 41 games this time around – playing a key role in Inter Milan ending Juventus’ reign of dominance in Serie A.

Despite having averaged around a goal every other game whilst at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was evidently not too keen on Lukaku, though, with the Norwegian having instead favoured the likes of Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Now, former United star and current teammate of Lukaku, Ashley Young, has opened up on the Manchester outfit’s decision to sell the Belgian. Young, however, remains mystified as to why Lukaku was let go:

“I said it at the time, I couldn’t understand the decision [to sell Lukaku].

“Whether it was made quickly or not, Romelu has proved a lot of people wrong. He’s worked unbelievably hard. There was talk that he was overweight and couldn’t do this or that. He’s smashed records and made history in Italy, he’s been unbelievable for the club. For me he was fantastic even in the Premier League, to go out there and face another challenge, I think it was the right choice for him. He deserves all the plaudits he is getting.”
