How Man City’s UEFA win impacts European qualification from the Premier League

Manchester City overturn their UEFA ban

Two Premier League teams have already qualified for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool, the 2019-20 Premier League champions, will compete in the competition.

While Man City are also guaranteed a spot in the Champions League following their victory against UEFA’s 2-year ban on Monday.

Last weekend, City’s 5-0 win at Brighton confirmed that they’ll finish the second in second place in the league.

Impact on European qualification from the Premier League

In this article, we’ll consider how Man City’s victory in court impacts several other Premier League teams looking to qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League next season.

Race for the Champions League

With Liverpool and Man City already in the 2020-21 Champions League, two more spots are available via the league.

At the time of writing, Chelsea are third and Leicester are fourth.

However, both clubs could drop down the table if Man United beat Southampton tonight.

Last weekend, Chelsea lost 3-0 at Sheffield United, while Leicester lost 4-1 at Bournemouth.

Wolves & Man United have an additional route into the Champions League

Aside from the finishing in the top 4, Wolves or Man United could book a spot in next season’s Champions League if they win this season’s Europa League.

Man United are 5-0 up against LASK in their last-16 tie, while Wolves drew 1-1 away at Olympiakos.

In the event that Man United or Wolves win the Europa League, but also fail to finish in the top 4, then the Premier League will have 5 representatives in next season’s Champions League.

Race for the Europa League

Man City’s appeal victory also means that whichever clubs finish 5th and 6th in the Premier League will qualify for the 2020-21 Europa League.

Wolves have 55 points in 6th, while Sheffield United have 54 points in 7th.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have 52 points in 8th and Arsenal have 50 points in 9th.

How Arsenal could pip Tottenham to a Europa League spot

Tottenham will now need to finish 7th now rather than 8th to qualify for the Europa League.

However, Spurs may need to finish 6th if Arsenal go on to win the FA Cup.

Of course, Tottenham have missed out on European football before by a similar technicality.

Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham side missed out on Champions League football after Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2012 prevented Spurs playing in the competition despite finishing 4th in the league that season.
