Great Britain’s women’s hockey team got their World League campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Spain in Valencia.

Two goals in a minute inside the final quarter proved enough for Danny Kerry’s side, with Reading’s Alex Danson opening the scoring from the penalty spot before Clifton’s Joie Leigh doubled the lead.

Kerry said: ‘Alex showed world class composure after a long wait for the stroke, then brilliant skill to centre the ball for Joie’s first international goal.

‘On a personal note I am delighted for Emily Maguire, who made her 150th international cap – that is some achievement.’

Britain’s next match is against Argentina on Saturday.

There are 10 countries competing in two pools of five with the top four nations in each reaching the knock-out phase.
