Georginio Wijnaldum opens up on why he left Liverpool

Georginio Wijnaldum has recently opened up on his decision to leave Liverpool over the summer.

Wijnaldum leaves Liverpool

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in 2016, departing Newcastle for a fee in the region of £24m.

The Dutchman was often used in a more advanced role for the Magpies. However, under Jurgen Klopp, the 30-year-old was dropped into a slightly deeper role.

In turn, alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, ‘Gini’ formed a devastating midfield trident which has proven absolutely essential to Liverpool’s success over recent seasons.

However, after his contract expired over the summer, Wijnaldum would depart Liverpool after five very successful years at the club.

The Dutchman has now been signed for French champions PSG on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum on why he left Liverpool

Now, on the back of his PSG switch, Wijnaldum has provided some insight into why he left Anfield.

With PSG assembling a super team over the summer and backed by very wealthy owners, some may have thought that Wijnaldum left for more money or to seek a new challenge in a fresh league.

However, when speaking recently, Wijnaldum seemed to hint that he left because he did not get the feeling Liverpool wanted to keep him.

He also stated that he had expressed the desire to stay at Liverpool:

“You follow your feeling. Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me.

“In these cases, we have to move forward.”
