Portugal preparing to face Hungary

Portugal are set to get their Euro 2020 campaign underway on Tuesday the 15th of June.

A Seleção’s first clash of the tournament will see them face off with Hungary at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium.

Hungary are arguably Portugal’s weakest Group F opponents, with fixtures versus France and Germany to follow Tuesday’s game.

Paulo Ferreira praises Cristiano Ronaldo

Ahead of the European champions getting the defence of their title underway, 101 have been speaking to Portugal and Chelsea legend, Paulo Ferreira.

Ferreira enjoyed an illustrious career which saw him secure the Champions League with FC Porto and three Premier League titles with Chelsea.

The defender was also a mainstay in Portugal’s backline between 2002 and 2010, notching 62 appearances and playing 47 minutes of the Euro 2004 final vs Greece.

Another to have played alongside Ferreira back in 2004 was Cristiano Ronaldo. The now Juventus man has of course gone on to enjoy a remarkable career, and helped Portugal to the Euro 2016 title.

In turn, speaking to 101, Ferreira opened up on his experiences with Ronaldo:

“He is one of the top players I’ve played with, so obviously when I started in the national team, he was around 18. So, it was in the beginning of his career and I saw all his progression and how much better and better he became but because of the hard work that he put in himself and then the goals he set to himself as well.

“He wants always more and more and more and for me he’s the big example for everyone. Obviously, he was one of the best players I played with. There’s another one that I said before you know that was Deco as well. Playing with him not just in the club but in the international team, he was also a top player that I was fortunate to play with, an amazing player.

“But to be honest I was fortunate to play so many top players. I think we could make two teams I think so.”

Ronaldo tipped to break Platini’s record

Ferreira was also asked if he believes Ronaldo can overtake Michel Platini in the European Championship record books this summer.

Ronaldo heads into the tournament having scored nine goals at the Euros, the joint-most alongside legendary attacker Platini.

Ferreira, though, is confident that his former teammate will surpass the Frenchman this summer, and also tipped Ronaldo to break Ali Daei’s record for most international goals scored:

“I think so, it’s just one goal I believe that he will do it. And that’s something he probably will have in his mind. If there a records to break and if he can do it he will do everything to break those records.

“And the other one that he is probably looking for as well, is to be the top goal scorer in all the national teams.

“He’s not far as well that is probably another goal that he has in his mind to. And probably he will [break the record] because he will not stop until he breaks that record as well.

“But he’s Cristiano and I hope he can break those records because he really deserves it. He is a top player and then this one, one goal from Platini, for sure he will do it.”
