Everton reportedly set to open contract talks with Barcelona-linked Michael Keane

A recent report in the English media has claimed that Everton are planning to open contract talks with Michael Keane.

Keane’s Everton stint

After impressing with Burnley, Everton secured Keane’s services in the summer of 2017.

The Toffees are understood to have paid somewhere in the region of £25m for the stopper.

Keane has since gone on to cement himself as a key figure in Everton’s backline.

All told, the Englishman has notched 107 appearances across all competitions for the Merseyside outfit, including 34 this past season.

Keane hasn’t always proven the most reliable centre-back in the world, but he has nevertheless put on some solid displays since making the move to Everton.

Everton to open contract talks with Keane

One man who appears to be a big fan of the centre-back’s talents, meanwhile, is Ronald Koeman.

Koeman was Everton manager when the club secured Keane’s services back in 2017.

And though the Dutchman only spent a few months in charge of Keane before being sacked, the former Burnley man seemingly left quite an impression.

Almost immediately following Koeman’s appointment as Barcelona’s new boss earlier this week, rumours began to circulate that the tactician is keen to bring Keane to the Camp Nou.

The level of truth in such rumours is difficult to gauge at this moment in time, but Everton, for one, do appear to have taken notice, as, according to The Times:

Everton are to open discussions on a new contract with Michael Keane after Barcelona were linked with the defender this week.

The report from The Times adds that Barcelona are yet to make contact with Everton over Keane, who is tied down at Goodison Park until 2022.
