Eliminated clubs to return? Chelsea, Real Madrid & Super League sides to be kicked out of Champions League ‘this week’

Eliminated clubs to return? Chelsea, Real Madrid & Super League sides to be kicked out of Champions League ‘this week’

A major update surrounding UEFA’s plans for the remainder of this season’s Champions League has been forthcoming on Monday evening.

ESL incoming

News centering on not only the Champions League, but European football as a whole, has of course taken centre stage across the globe over the last 24 hours.

This comes after twelve clubs – namely Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – revealed plans to shake the very sport to its core.

This comes in the form of the establishment of a ‘Super League’, which would see a host of the continent’s finest break away from the current structures of the European game, to form their own elite tournament.

The news, inevitably, has been met by widespread disapproval, on the part of fans, pundits and footballing institutions alike.

Governing body UEFA, for example, have already moved forward with a host of threats, including the expulsion of all participating clubs from domestic competition, and a ban on any Super League-based players from both the European Championships and World Cup.

‘Going out’

And, as outlined above, a fresh update on the potential ramifications of the ESL on the final rounds of this season’s Champions League has tonight also been provided.

And the news, for three of the clubs, will no doubt come as a heavy blow.

As per Jesper Møller, chairman of the Danish FA and UEFA ExCo member, three of the four Champions League semi-finalists – in the form of Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid – are expected to be expelled from the competition by the end of the week:

‘[Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea] are going out, and I expect that to happen on Friday. And then you have to see how to finish the Champions League.’

This of course comes with the trio representing a significant core of the Super League founding members.

Paris Saint-Germain, in turn, would stand as the sole semi-finalist set to maintain their place in the tournament, with alternative avenues to see out the final two rounds seemingly underway.
