Despite club denials, video appears to show stewards allowing Man United fans inside Old Trafford

Footage doing the rounds on social media on Monday evening has painted a very different picture of yesterday’s high-profile protests at Old Trafford.

Chaos at the Theatre of Dreams

The headline story in the English media this weekend of course surrounded ongoings on the red half of Manchester.

This came after Manchester United’s supporters flooded to the club’s ground in their thousands, to stage a protest against owner Joel Glazer.

Incredibly, the scale of the movement eventually resulted in the Reds’ scheduled meeting with Liverpool being postponed.

After supporters managed to make their way inside the club’s ground and onto the Old Trafford pitch, United released an official statement, explaining the decision:

‘Following discussion between the Police, The Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.’

‘Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.’

Stewards involved?

In turn, in the aftermath of the chaotic scenes, much of the immediate fallout surrounded how exactly the protesters involved managed to make their way inside the stadium.

Manchester United, for their part, were quick to assure that access had been gained by illegal means, out of the control of the stewards on duty:

‘Reports in mainstream and social media that protesters were able to access the stadium and pitch via a gate opened by club staff are completely incorrect.’

‘After breaking through barriers and security on the forecourt, some protestors climbed the gates at the end of the Munich tunnel, then forced access to a side door in the stand, before opening an external door that let others through to the concourse area and the pitch.’

As outlined above, however, footage doing the rounds on social media this evening would suggest otherwise.

In a clip revealed by one of those in attendance at the protest, fans are seen being essentially ushered through a gate into the stadium, as the individual recording repeatedly insists ‘you’ve opened the door’:
