Defending champion Ennis-Hill takes heptathlon lead

Britain’s defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill took the lead in the Olympic heptathlon after four events as Katarina Johnson-Thompson fell to fourth following the shot put and 200m.

Ennis-Hill has a 72-point advantage on Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam, with Johnson-Thompson 100 points adrift.

She lost ground in the shot put, throwing 11.68m compared to Ennis-Hill’s 13.86m and Thiam’s 14.91m.

The event finishes with the long jump, javelin and 800m on Saturday.
