Dean Henderson will reportedly only sign new Man United deal ‘if promised no.1 spot’/Chelsea circling

Dean Henderson

An insight into Dean Henderson’s demands to put pen to paper on a new contract with Manchester United has today been provided.

Henderson impressing

Highly-regarded shot-stopper Henderson is a product of the Red Devils’ youth academy, but has spent the last 2 years plying his trade with Sheffield United.

And, after playing a key role in the Blades’ return to the Premier League in 2018/19, the 23-year-old’s stock has continued to rise to this point in the current campaign.

As Chris Wilder’s men defy the odds in battling it out for a European berth, Henderson has conceded just 25 goals across 29 appearances.

This is a record bettered only by top of the table Liverpool.

Henderson eyeing first-choice spot

The end of the campaign, though, will see Henderson’s future thrown up in the air, after his loan deal at Bramall Lane expires.

With David de Gea having long stood as the undisputed no.1 at Old Trafford, and Argentinian international Sergio Romero a reliable backup, Manchester United have a goalkeeping dilemma on their hands.

Romero would presumably be the first to depart, should United decide that the time has come to move one of their shot-stoppers on.

However, if the latest word stemming from the media is to be believed, then Dean Henderson’s demands could be set to rock the plans of the Red Devils hierarchy.

As per a report from the reliable Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, a new contract for their Sheffield United loanee is being readied by Manchester United.

Henderson himself, though, will refuse to commit to the terms of any new deal until he is promised first-choice status at Old Trafford:

‘Henderson is intent on not ending up in a similar situation to former United academy goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who repeatedly signed contract offers until he permanently left at the age of 25 without playing for the club.’

Significantly, it is also added that the Englishman has no intention of returning to his parent club to compete with David de Gea next season.

Finally, Luckhurst names Chelsea as keen admirers of Henderson’s talents, with the Blues just one of a host of clubs thought to be ready to pounce in the case that the shot-stopper expresses a desire to move on.
