Southampton fans were rocked yesterday by the news that star striker Danny Ings has turned down a potential contract extension on the South coast.
The deal, which would have made him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, was thought not to be turned down for financial reasons. Rather, Ings wants the opportunity to test himself at a higher level than the South Coast side, and feels as though any new contract could price him out of a move.

Southampton, of course, are no strangers to selling their best players, with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Toby Alderweireld, Sadio Mane and Luke Shaw all having left for greener pastures in the past. However, they are normally in the driving seat, able to command higher fees.
This will not be the case this time around, however. Indeed, the Saints will have to make the difficult decision of whether to sell their main goal threat this summer, or let him walk away for free next summer.
Adam Armstrong lined up as a replacement
According to reports coming out of Lancashire, it is Blackburn Rovers’ Adam Armstrong that has been earmarked as an option for Southampton as they look to strengthen their forward line. Indeed, the Lancashire Telegraph claim that Blackburn have already rejected an opening bid for their main man.
Armstrong, who netted 29 goals for Blackburn last season, is thought to be valued at 20 million pounds by the northern side, with Newcastle’s 40% sell-on fee a huge factor in the high price tag.
Although the report suggests that he is not intended as a replacement for Ings, it is hard to see how the goalscoring mantle would not fall to him were the Southampton man to depart.
