Chelsea’s Mason Mount assesses his debut season in the Premier League

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount recently opened up on his debut season in the Premier League.

Chelsea standout

The 2019/20 campaign, whether by the choice of Frank Lampard, the club’s transfer ban, or a combination of the two, has seen Chelsea heavily focus on youth.

The Blues’ academy has produced some top talents over the years, but the club has often instead opted to rely on big-money signings, rather than giving their youngsters a chance to shine.

Under Lampard, though, a plethora of stars from Chelsea’s academy have been afforded opportunities this season. A number of these starlets, such as Tammy Abraham, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori, meanwhile, have gone on to secure first-team spots for the capital giants.

Another youngster who has broken into Chelsea’s senior set-up this term is Mason Mount.

After impressing under Lampard on loan at Derby County last season, Mount was subsequently handed the chance to shine in the Premier League this time out.

And it is fair to say that the 21-year-old has grasped this opportunity with both hands.

All told, Mount has notched 41 appearances for Chelsea in 2019/20, with his superb club form having also seen the Englishman handed his senior international debut back in September.

Of course, the COVID-19-hit Premier League campaign is not yet over.

Chelsea will resume their season on Sunday the 21st of June , in a meeting with a struggling Aston Villa side.

And ahead of the restart, as mentioned above, Mason Mount has been assessing his debut top-flight campaign.

The attack-minded midfielder admitted that he has endured some ‘ups and downs’ this term, before providing an insight into just how much this season has meant to him:

“There’s been ups and downs, but the main thing for me coming out of this season is how much I’ve learnt and grown as a player, on and off the pitch,” said Mount.

“Also how much I’ve learnt playing against some of the best players in the world. It’s my first season in the Premier League and, as a boy, I dreamt of playing in the Premier League.

“For me to have my first season, make loads of debuts and score some goals has meant so much to me.”
