Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger rubbishes ‘nonsense rumours’ involving himself, Lampard & Azpilicueta

Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger has recently responded to rumours claiming he spoke to the board about Frank Lampard and had issues with Cezar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea sack Frank Lampard

The headline news in the footballing at the end of last month, of course, came in the form of confirmation that Chelsea had parted ways with manager Frank Lampard.

Lampard’s dismissal came just a day after the Londoners had ousted Luton Town from the FA Cup.

Chelsea’s league form, though, had of course proven pretty dire for some time. They had managed just one win in five under Lampard, leaving the Blues languishing in 10th spot in the Premier League table.

Rudiger sets the record straight

In the aftermath of Lampard’s dismissal, there were some interesting rumours spreading online.

It was claimed that some players, one believed to have been Antoni Rudiger, went to the Chelsea board to voice their displeasure at Lampard.

However, now, in an interview with The Athletic, Rudiger has moved to set the record straight, stating that he had never talked to the board about the situation of coach:

There have been so many nonsense rumours around about me since last week. I’ve never talked with the board about the situation of the coach or on any other topics.

“Frank Lampard trusted in my abilities after Christmas in a very difficult situation and I was thankful for this. It was also the main reason I told my representatives not to look for a possible winter move anymore. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for our team to turn things around for the coach. We always wanted the best for the manager and for the club.”

Elsewhere, it was reported that the German had issues with Cesar Azpilicueta, with Rudiger having this to say on the topic:

“There has never been any problem with Azpi. He’s my captain and I’m very thankful that he and also Tammy reacted that quickly after they’d heard the rumours on social media.

“It looked like people from outside wanted to bother our unity in the squad. Hopefully, this negativity will go away again very soon and we can continue performances like in the Burnley game.”
