Chelsea set for Hazard windfall after Real Madrid clinch La Liga title

Real crowned La Liga champions

The penultimate gameweek of the 2019/20 La Liga season took place on Thursday evening.

Barcelona and Real Madrid were in action at the same time, with the latter having been aware that three points would secure them the Spanish top-flight title.

Real, who began the day four points clear of 2nd-placed Barca, were in action against Villarreal.

The Blaugrana, meanwhile, faced off with Osasuna, knowing that a victory was needed to keep their diminishing title hopes alive.

However, after just 15 minutes of action, Barca found themselves a goal down, thanks to a strike from their former player, Jose Arnaiz.

Barca did manage to pull one back, but went behind for a second time in second-half injury-time.

Real Madrid, though, didn’t need to rely on Barca dropping points, with the in-form Karim Benzema having fired them into the lead with 29 minutes on the clock vs Villarreal.

The Frenchman then doubled Madrid’s advantage from the spot with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Vicente Iborra did look to have sparked something of a fightback on the part of the visitors late in the game. But Marco Asensio’s injury-time effort ensured that Real were bringing home their first La Liga title since 2017:

Chelsea set for pay-out

With Real Madrid now officially crowned La Liga champions, Chelsea are reportedly set for a financial windfall.

The payment in question comes as a result of the Spanish outfit’s deal for Eden Hazard, whom they signed from Chelsea last summer for an initial fee of €100m – potentially rising to over €140m with add-ons.

And one of those add-ons, according to the reliable Kristof Terreur, will now need to be paid up for, after Real clinched the title this evening.
