Chelsea boss Tuchel explains decision to start Ziyech over Werner vs Man United

Chelsea vs Man United

Chelsea and Manchester United are currently locked in action at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues headed into the tie enjoying a fine start to life under new boss Thomas Tuchel.

Before Sunday, the Blues had managed to remain unbeaten in eight outings across all competitions under the German.

Such fine form had put the Londoners firmly back in the race for a Champions League place this season.

And after West Ham dropped points against Manchester City on Saturday, Chelsea knew a victory over Man United would see them take the Hammers’ place in the top-four.

Seeing off a Man United side who have lost just four league games all season and are the PL’s top scorers at present is easier said than done though, with Sunday’s meeting one of Tuchel’s toughest tests since he moved to England.

Tuchel explains Ziyech > Werner against Man United

Ahead of kick-off, Chelsea of course released their starting line-up an hour before.

And there were a number of interesting decisions made by the German including Ben Chilwell starting over Marcos Alonso.

Another was the inclusion of Hakim Ziyech from the off with Timo Werner on the bench.

The German has been a regular future under Tuchel, whilst Ziyech had notched just 14 minutes of action in the Londoners’ last five league games.

The former PSG boss, though, has since provided an explanation for his decision to start Ziyech over Werner, suggesting the Moroccan’s display vs Atletico Madrid and Werner needing a rest were key reasons why he made that choice:
