Thomas Tuchel speaks out over contract situations of two Chelsea defenders

Tuchel talks Rüdiger

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke to the media in his pre-match press conference before the Blues pay a visit to the King Power Stadium tomorrow in the lunchtime clash with Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City, and took time to give an update surrounding the contract and future of key center-back Antonio Rüdiger.

The German international has become vital under his compatriot since Tuchel took the reins from Frank Lampard halfway through last season, but questions have arisen regarding whether his future remains at Stamford Bridge or if he intends to move abroad to potentially greener pastures on the continent.

According to Tuchel, via Goal’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella, the Blues are adamant in their desire to keep the former VfB Stuttgart and AS Roma center-back in west London, and are keen to extend his deal beyond this season. Tuchel also reiterated his assuredness that Rüdiger is happy at the club, given his status among the first-team as a vital piece in the machine that currently sits atop the Premier League table going into the weekend.

Christensen destined for Chelsea stay?

Another center-back that has seen questions swirl regarding his future at Chelsea is Danish international Andreas Christensen.

Like Rüdiger, Christensen has been a key performer under Tuchel since the German’s arrival, and the 25-year-old has started each of the Blues’ four Champions League clashes this season while starting the vast majority of the club’s Premier League fixtures, too.

Christensen is also out of contract next summer, though, and has recently been linked with interest from the new Xavi regime taking root in Catalunya. Nevertheless, he remains a valued part of the puzzle at Chelsea under the former Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and 1. FSV Mainz 05 headmaster.

According to Tuchel: “From Andreas, in my view, everyone wants the same thing. The coach, the club, and the player. In the next days, I expect some good news.”

If all goes well, the Pensioners should have the lion’s share of their defensive spine sorted in due course.
