Chelsea’s European roadshow

Chelsea, by virtue of their Champions League success, have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Their victory over Manchester City in May was perhaps the biggest success that Thomas Tuchel could achieve, having taken over a squad in January that seemed in freefall and sat in 9th place under Frank Lampard.

Now, almost a year later, they will be playing in the most exclusive club competition in the world.

The Blues will be joined by Al Hilal, Al Ahly, CF Monterrey, Auckland City, Al Jazira and Palmeiras in the draw, which takes place on Monday afternoon.

Dates for the tournament confirmed

Now, FIFA have confirmed the dates for the competition, which will take place in the early part of 2022.

As per an official statement, FIFA revealed:

The dates for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2021 presented by Alibaba Cloud have been set from 3 to 12 February 2022. The draw, taking place on Monday, 29 November in Zurich, will decide the eight matches to be played in total between the representatives of each confederation and the host country, UAE.

The result? Chelsea’s ties with both Brighton and Arsenal will both have to be rescheduled, while Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech could miss the tournament should they progress with their sides into the latter stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Will this derail Chelsea’s title push, or will it be more silverware to kickstart a promising looking season.
