Cesc rates Wilshere

Jack Wilshere remains a free agent and yet to find a new club, however former Arsenal teammate has come out to back the Englishman with some high praise. Cesc Fabregas was Arsenal captain at the time a young Jack Wilshere burst onto the scene.

Wilshere’s performance at home to Barcelona in the Champions League with the Catalans at the height of their power under Pep Guardiola was one of the best the competition has ever scene. With Messi on the pitch, Wilshere even had elements of the diminutive Argentine’s game showing through. Twisting and turning with his low centre of gravity enabled the Gunners to compete and take a vital win.

“Jack was such a good talent, one of the most talented players I’ve ever played with,” Fabregas said.

“He was just 16 when he first came to train with us and I was like “wow this guy is good, strong, sharp.” It’s a big shame what has happened to him, I feel sorry because he could have been a proper English legend of the game. “

Wilshere was released by West Ham in the previous transfer window and released a statement expressing frustration at the lack of opportunities.

‘Could have’

Plenty of footballers are described using the words ‘could have’ and typically injury befell these talents. Wilshere is one of the most famous examples. A spate of ankle injuries throughout his career suffered both in games and training left Wilshere with little time to flourish.

Arsenal even loaned Wilshere to Bournemouth where he amassed plenty of appearances. However, injury again curtailed his season and in April of 2017 returned to Arsenal to undergo treatment. Wilshere did play again for Arsenal, typically in the cup competitions, but eventually decided to leave and join boy-hood club West Ham.

He spent further time in east London side-lined but as read in his statement, maintained he was fit enough but not given opportunities.

Fabregas says that were it not for the injuries he and others like him could have gone onto greater things.

“We always talk about how British players would adapt to teams in Europe – I always believed that Jack was one of the few Brits who could have made it big time at Real Madrid or Barcelona,” said the Spaniard.

“Same with Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale. These guys are so talented, without injuries they could have done much more.”

With January fast approaching, Wilshere may yet be able to find a club in England or abroad to rekindle his career once again.
