NFL veteran Jared Allen certainly chose an unconventional way to announce his retirement from the game.

After 12 years at the top level, the Carolina Panthers defensive end has decided to call it a day. There was no press conference. No big announcement. Instead, Allen posted a short video on his Twitter account.

Sporting a cowboy hat and sitting on a horse, Allen bid farewell before ‘riding off into the sunset’.

‘Hello everyone, I just want to say thank you for an amazing 12-year career. This was the part where I was going to ride off into the sunset, but seeing how there is no sunset… I’m just going to ride off,’ Allen said with a wave before turning his steed toward a snow-covered plain.

The 33-year-old Texan’s final game proved to be the Panthers’ defeat by the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 earlier this month.

Peyton Manning’s side produced a defensive masterclass to claim a 24-10 victory at Levi’s Stadium.

Allen, who is ninth on the NFL’s all-time quarterback sacks list, also had stints with Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears.

Allen later released a statement calling an end to this 12-year career: ‘I want to take this time to thank my family, friends, fans, and teammates who have given their continued support throughout my 12-year career.

‘It’s been a great ride for me, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the memories. It is with a great deal of thought and consideration that I have decided that I will not return to football next year.

‘I want to thank the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs organizations, who provided me with an opportunity to live out my dream and to be a part of their wonderful communities. Thanks for the lifelong memories.’
