Carlo Ancelotti’s decision on Martin Odegaard is a blow for Arsenal

Arteta’s Odegaard hope

Arsenal supporters enjoyed the short spell Martin Odegaard had at Arsenal. He was pivotal in turning their horrific run of games around which saw them finish second in the form table from the time he arrived at the club.

However, no assurances over his future have yet been made.

Mikel Arteta spoke confidently about what his plan was for Odegaard at the end of the season. The Spaniard seeming to insinuate his preference for him to remain at the club next season.

“Well we have a very clear and strong opinion on what we would like to do. He’s not our player. We’ll have discussions in the next few weeks, but first of all we need to respect that he’s a Real Madrid player. We’ll have those communications,” he said.

“We’ve tried to make everything that we could to get Martin performing for the team, which I think he’s done, and he has adapted really well to our way of playing and to our football club. Hopefully we have given him the hope and the feeling that this could be a good place for him.”

Ancelotti to break hope

Real Madrid’s new head coach Carlo Ancelotti will be the man to make the decisions regarding the club’s current crop including Odegaard.

The Norwegian signed for Los Blancos in the year which Ancelotti left the club in 2015.

He has been coaching Everton where he has been able to see Odegaard first hand at the Gunners.

It now seems as if the hope that Arteta had of him staying however is set to be broken.

Outlets in Spain are suggesting that the club are not looking to pursue deals in the area of attacking midfield because Ancelotti ‘trusts’ Odegaard to be the player for him.

Under Zidane, Real Madrid rarely played with a player in Odegaard’s position – the number 10 role. However, at Everton, Ancelotti used one of James Rodriguez or Gylfi Sigurdsson in a number 10 role. It is very possible he will look to deploy a similar system upon his return to the Spanish capital.

Arsenal therefore may need to turn to other options.
