Manchester United left it late against Everton to beat the Toffees. Edinson Cavani with a left-footed strike from outside of the box to seal the win in the 88th minute, Martial popped up in the 96 to add insult to injury and confirm United’s place in the semi-final.

Manchester City eased past a poor Arsenal side 4-1 at the Emirates. Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte all scored for Pep Guardiola’s side. City have a very successful recent history in the competition with it being used as a boost to push them towards the end of the season. This will not be the case this season however with the final being delayed by 2 months and therefore taking place in April.

Tottenham avoided a scare against Championship side Stoke City. Despite taking an early lead through Gareth Bale, the former Premier League club struck back with an equaliser. However, in the end, goals from Ben Davies and Harry Kane secured a semi-final slot for the North London club.

Brentford have enjoyed an exceptional run on their way to the semi-final this season – a first for the club in the history. The championship club have beaten four top tier sides including Newcastle West Brom Fulham and Southampton. This means Spurs should take no arrogance into the match against the Bees or risk underestimating a very good side.

The semi-finals will take place from the week beginning the 4th of January.
