It was the last time John Boyett could call John Elway his boss.

Boyett, who had been a member of the Broncos practice squad, was arrested early Wednesday morning in suburban Denver after an ugly incident with a cab driver.

The apparent out-of-control football player encouraged the cops to “contact his boss, John Elway,”
the Denver Post reported, citing police records. He repeatedly slammed his head into the patrol car window while yelling and spitting after throwing out the name of the Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback and current VP of football operations.

If the 24-year-old safety out of Oregon thought Elway’s name would help him out, he was mistaken. The Broncos cut Boyett on Thursday. He has been charged with third-degree assault, theft and harassment, the newspaper reported.

Cops say that Boyett, who had been drinking at a local sports bar, head-butted and punched the cab driver who had been called to drive him home after a bartender and other bar patrons reported that he was highly intoxicated and making threats.

The bizarre tale out of the Mile High City also included a stolen shovel from a construction site and an attempt by the player to hide from officers by covering himself with mulch.

It’s not the first time Boyett has tried to play the NFL player card after a run-in with police.

Boyett was busted in September of 2013 on charges of disorderly public intoxication and resisting law enforcement after an incident at a downtown Indianapolis bar while a member of the Colts.

“You can’t arrest me; I’m a Colts player,” Boyett told cops, the Indianapolis Star reported at the time.

It didn’t work then, either. Boyett, who had been a sixth-round pick of the Colts earlier that year, was cut the next day.

The Broncos gave Boyett a second chance during training camp this summer, but he was waived after the team’s final preseason game. He was later signed to the team’s practice squad.
