Besiktas “interested” in Arsenal defender, what does this mean for Gunners’ backline?

Arsenal have been suffering defensive issues seemingly since time immemorial. Central defenders have come and gone at the Emirates stadium. While they have consistently spent in this position, they remain as unclear about their first-choice defensive partnership as ever.

Centre-back woes continue

The current crop of centre-halves is showing little sign of bucking this worrying trend. Gabriel is seemingly the first choice in the left-centre back slot, but will not be available for the first few games of the season after being called up to Brazil’s Olympic squad.

His potential replacement, Pablo Mari, is seemingly the target of Turkish side Besiktas, according to a report in Spanish outlet AS. As per the report, Mari’s potential deal would be a one year loan, while the Spaniard is rumoured to be considering the offer as it would offer him a chance to play in the Champions League.

This would leave a void in the centre of Arsenal’s back four, and it remains to be seen how any deal would be received in north London.

Right-side little better

On the other side of central defence, at present options appear a little better. Rob Holding offers a solid but uninspiring choice while 20-year-old William Saliba is yet to prove himself at Premier League level and is set for a third consecutive loan spell.

However, this loan may not be at Olympique Marseilles, as originally thought. According to L’equipe, Marseilles boss Jorge Sampaoli is set to pull the plug on the move in favour of a more experienced defender.

With David Luiz having departed the club, all of Arsenal’s defensive eggs appear to be in a Ben White shaped basket at present. But will he offer the consistency and leadership that the Gunners crave at the back?
