Bayern’s Lucas Hernandez the latest high-profile name tipped to join Newcastle

Reports stemming from Germany today suggest that Newcastle United have set their sights on the signature of Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez.

Ashley set for imminent departure

Following a drawn-out 13-year spell, it looks as though Mike Ashley’s turbulent reign as Newcastle owner is finally set to come to an end this summer.

This comes on the back of widespread reports that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (one of the richest men on the planet) will imminently formalise a takeover at St. James’ Park.

The deal is expected to be worth a fee in the region of £340 million, with Dubai-based financier Amanda Staveley (who runs PCP Partners) acting as an intermediary.

Hernandez to Tyneside?

If the change in ownership at Newcastle, as predicted, does go through without any hitches over the coming weeks, this would of course see Mohammed bin Salman handed the opportunity to flex his financial muscle ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Major investment is expected on both player personnel and the club’s bench, amid rampant rumours that Steve Bruce’s days as Magpies boss are numbered.

Former Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino is widely-speculated to be the no. 1 managerial target of the incoming Newcastle brass, while rumours have also been rampant of late regarding a host of potential high-profile additions to the club’s squad.

Philippe Coutinho and Gareth Bale are just two of the superstar names to have been pushed as targets at St. James’ Park of late, with Brazilian legend Rivaldo having publicly urged the latter to depart Real Madrid for Tyneside this summer.

And, as outlined above, another player currently plying his trade at one of world football’s biggest clubs has today been tipped to make the move to St. James’ Park.

The individual in question? Bayern Munich’s Lucas Hernandez.

French stopper Hernandez, who is generally deployed as a left-back, has endured a difficult debut campaign in Bavaria, on the back of his big-money arrival from Atletico Madrid last summer.

In fact, due to a combination of injury troubles and struggles for form, the World Cup winner has managed starts in just 9 of Bayern’s 38 competitive fixtures across all competitions.

As such, with Alphonso Davies having exploded onto the scene at the Allianz Arena over the course of the campaign, speculation has hinted that the German champions could be tempted into parting with Hernandez this summer.

And, though it would come as a surprise for Bayern to give up on the club’s record signing after just a solitary season, it appears that Newcastle are ready to test the resolve of the Bundesliga powerhouse.

As per a report from Bild, the Magpies are expressing a keen interest in Hernandez, with a summer bid not ruled out.
