Bayern Munich ‘bracing themselves’ for Liverpool’s Thiago swoop – Honigstein

German football expert Raphael Honigstein has this evening provided an update on the situation surrounding wantaway Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.

Recent weeks have seen Spanish midfielder Thiago hotly-tipped as a potential arrival on Merseyside.

The former Barcelona man has been plying his trade at the Allianz Arena for 7 seasons now.

Thiago has gone on to cement himself as one of the star midfielders in the Bundesliga during his time on the books of Bayern, with the 29-year-old’s touch, vision and passing ability all of the highest quality.

The 37-time capped international has also secured German top-flight titles in each of his seasons with the Bavarians, along with the FIFA Club World Cup in 2013.

Despite his long-standing success in Munich, though, the 2019/20 campaign is expected to mark Thiago’s final one in Bayern’s colours.

Speaking earlier this month, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO at the Allianz, confirmed that his side’s midfield conductor had expressed the desire to move on:

‘He’s a great guy on and off the pitch. We negotiated with him and met all of his wishes, but Thiago Alcantara wants to leave.’

‘It looks like he may want to do something new at the end of his career. We don’t want to lose a player for free next year. I say that very clearly.’

Of the clubs to have been tipped as a potential landing spot for Thiago this summer, meanwhile, Premier League champions Liverpool have been, by some distance, the most persistently linked.

Despite having only recently secured their first league title in 30 years, the Reds are expected to seek out reinforcements to Jurgen Klopp’s squad this summer.

And Thiago, by all accounts, fits the bill of the kind of player being targeted by the transfer chiefs at Anfield.

‘Bracing themselves’

And, as outlined above, if the latest speculation stemming from Germany is to be believed, then Bayern appear to be fully aware of Liverpool’s interest in their midfield star.

Speaking to Sky Sports News this evening, Raphael Honigstein, regarded as highly reliable when it comes to transfer news, was drawn on Thiago’s situation.

The German first explained that Bayern were actually confident that they were set to tie the 29-year-old down to fresh terms, before Thiago ‘changed his mind’.

It is also added that ‘no offer’ has yet been forthcoming from an interested party.

Significantly, though, Honigstein suggests that those in a position of power at the Aliianz Arena are now ‘bracing themselves’ for an assault from Liverpool.

As such, though the Reds have thus far been keen to distance themselves from the speculation linking the club with an assult for Thiago, it now appears likely that an offer will, in time, be forthcoming.
