Barcelona’s Pedri breaks Wayne Rooney record in Spain’s meeting with Croatia

Spanish starlet Pedri has this evening become the new owner of a European Championship record, after being handed a start in his country’s showdown with Croatia.

Simon’s blushes spared

Luis Enrique’s men are currently locked in Euro 2020 Last-16 action, at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

La Roja headed into proceedings with their tails up, after finally finding top gear en route to a 5-0 drubbing of Slovakia in the country’s final group stage outing last week.

In turn, it came as a major blow when, with just 20 minutes on the clock this evening, Spain fell behind.

The game’s opener came about in altogether bizarre fashion, as the aforementioned Pedri’s pass back towards goal was completely miscued by Unai Simon, who allowed the ball to slip beyond him and into the Spanish net:

La Roja, though, to their credit, soon bounced back.

A sustained spell of pressure shortly before the interval eventually culminated in the best efforts of Dominik Livaković coming up short, as Pablo Sarabia sent the two sides into the break locked at a goal apiece:

Rooney replaced

Pedri, as outlined above, has of course seen his name cast into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this evening, on the back of his role in one of the most memorable own goals in recent football history.

However, ahead of kick-off in the Danish capital, Barcelona’s gifted young midfielder grabbed the headlines for altogether more positive reasons.

As revealed by statisticians Opta, in featuring from the off versus Croatia, Pedri became the youngest player to ever start a European Championship fixture, replacing previous record holder Wayne Rooney:
