Word stemming from the Spanish media on Sunday suggests that Barcelona are eyeing up a move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

Blues struggles

German international Rudiger has of course endured a campaign to forget thus far.

On the back of the arrival of veteran Thiago Silva in southwest London, the 27-year-old has slipped majorly down the pecking order of Frank Lampard.

As things stand, all of Silva, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori represent favoured options for the Chelsea boss.

In turn, across the Blues’ opening 13 fixtures in 2020/21, Rudiger has been afforded just a solitary start.

Add to this the fact that Chelsea finally appear to have put the club’s defensive woes behind them, and a route back into the plans of Frank Lampard becomes an even more difficult one to navigate for the German.

Barca bound?

As such, it should come as little surprise to see speculation hinting at an imminent Stamford Bridge exit for Rudiger begin to mount.

The former Roma man was actually hotly tipped to move on during the summer, with a surprise Tottenham switch having even been touted late in the window.

As outlined above, though, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is to be believed, then one of European football’s heavyweights now appear to have set their sights firmly on the out-of-favour Chelsea man.

The outfit in question? Barcelona.

As per a report from Sport, the Blaugrana have made the addition of a new centre-half in the January window a priority.

Manchester City’s Eric Garcia, a La Masia youth product, remains the club’s no.1 target.

However, in the case that Barca are unable to swing a winter deal for the soon-to-be out of contract Citizens starlet, they will be forced to turn the club’s attentions towards a short-term fix.

Step forward, Antonio Rudiger.

It is claimed that the Catalans view the German international as the ideal option to reinforce the club’s backline, until a more permanent solution is found next summer.

A loan swoop is therefore touted, with Rudiger himself said to be very much in favour of a Camp Nou switch.

Alternative options outlined by Sport include the likes of Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi and Serie A pair Federico Fazio and German Pezzella.
