Wijnaldum in final year of Liverpool deal

Georginio Wijnaldum has, of course, spent the last four and a bit years plying his trade with Liverpool.

In that time, the Dutchman has firmly cemented himself as an integral member of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Despite his key role, however, the 29-year-old’s future at Anfield is actually somewhat up in the air at present.

Wijnaldum has entered the final year of his current Liverpool deal.

And despite having proven so crucial to the Merseyside outfit’s recent success, his long-term future has been cast into doubt.

Reports over the summer even went as far as to claim that the Premier League champions have no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

Wijnaldum coy on future

Wijnaldum has also seemingly attracted interest from Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona over the last few months, no doubt adding to speculation that his Liverpool stint is coming to a close.

Should Wijnaldum indeed decide to join Barca, he could sign a pre-contract agreement with the Catalonian outfit from as early as January 1st.

As a result, the Liverpool faithful would no doubt love the midfielder to agree a new deal and squash the speculation sooner rather than later.

However, recent comments on the part of Wijnaldum are unlikely to have reassured Liverpool fans.

The Dutchman was recently drawn on his contract situation whilst on international duty. But Wijnaldum remained rather coy and actually seemed quite angry in his response:

“I can’t say anything about that.

“Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer? I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”
