Bad news for Crystal Palace & Burnley as Premier League to extend 5 subs rule for 2020-21

Premier League to extend 5 subs rule for 2020-21

In an exclusive report from the Athletic’s Matt Slater, it’s been confirmed that the new rule allowing Premier League clubs to make up to 5 substitutions per game will be extended for the entirety of the 2020-21 season.

Readers have been told:

World football’s law-makers are set to extend the temporary rule allowing teams to make five substitutes in a game, rather than three, for all of next season.

The Athletic understands that IFAB’s board of directors is expected to announce the extension in the coming days.

Bad news for Crystal Palace & Burnley

In the build-up to Crystal Palace’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night, Eagles manager Roy Hodgson spoke out against the new 5 subs rule.

Hodgson voiced his belief that the Premier League should revert back to 3 subs next season. The Crystal Palace boss argued that the rule is a huge benefit to the bigger teams in the division:

It does tip the balance to the clubs with bigger and stronger squads.

If we give everyone a chance to start with a level playing field next year, when you don’t have necessarily this problem hanging over you of playing so many matches, then it would probably be in the interest of clubs like ours – although we won’t be alone – to go back to three.

It’s worth noting that Crystal Palace are one of the clubs who have made the fewest substitutions in the Premier League this season.

Similarly, Burnley rarely change their team too. Sean Dyche’s side have made the fewest changes in the league by some margin.

Indeed, since the restart, Burnley have only made six changes in four games.

Like Hodgson, Dyche has previously stated his objections to the 5 subs rule, saying:

I think we should have stuck with the same rules…

It quite obviously favours the big squads, and we haven’t got a big squad, so I don’t think we needed to change the rules.

Good news for Man United & Liverpool

When considering other clubs who will likely be upset with the rule change regarding subs, the Athletic confirm that Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and West Ham all voted against the proposal when it was originally raised this season.

It’s worth noting that only three clubs in the Premier League have made 5 changes in each of their matches since the restart.

Those clubs are Brighton, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Why is the 5 subs rule being extended for 2020-21?

The rationale for increasing the numbers of subs from 3 to 5 appeared to make sense with regard to finishing the current season.

With the fixture list being so hectic, risks to players’ health have increased.

However, the hope is that the 2020-21 Premier League season will return to the usual football calendar, with much more time between games.

So was this change needed? The Athletic reveal the basis for this major rule change in 2020-21:

IFAB believes the late start to next season will lead to the same player-welfare concerns existing throughout the 2020-21 campaign.
