Atletico Madrid’s Covid problems mount further ahead of Chelsea showdown

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have, on Monday, confirmed that another pair of the club’s stars have tested positive for Covid-19.

Concerns at the Metropolitano

The coronavirus situation at Atleti has proven one of Spanish football’s major talking points of late.

This comes with the Rojiblancos, despite continuing to charge towards the La Liga title, having been forced to deal with a host of cases over the last couple of weeks.

First, late last month, the capital outfit released a statement, confirming that both Yannick Carrasco and Mario Hermoso had returned positive tests:

This was followed last Wednesday by the announcement that the virus had spread further, with star attacker Joao Felix, too, having seen a test come back positive.

Then, just 24 hours later, new signing Moussa Dembele was forced to join those in self isolation.

And, as outlined above, on Monday, the identities of the latest pair of Diego Simeone’s stars to have tested positive for Covid-19 have been revealed.

The duo in question come in the form of Thomas Lemar and Hector Herrera:

Word of Atleti’s latest outbreak comes with just over two weeks remaining before Los Colchoneros get their Champions League campaign back underway, in a round-of-16 meeting with Premier League giants Chelsea.

Celta strike late

Elsewhere on the Atletico front this evening, meanwhile, Simeone and co. saw their titles hopes dealt a (minor) blow, in a 2-2 stalemate with Celta Vigo.

After Luis Suarez turned the clash on its head with a quickfire brace in Madrid, Facundo Ferreyra levelled things up on the stroke of the full-time whistle, to secure a share of the spoils for Celta:

Atleti now sit 8 points clear of both Barcelona and Real Madrid at the La Liga summit, whilst also boasting a game in hand.
