Lokonga turns creator-in-chief against Newcastle

Arsenal’s Belgian international starlet Sambi Lokonga put in a brilliant display against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium earlier today, but one stat showed that the RSC Anderlecht youth product ran the show from the heart of the Gunners midfield.

Courtesy of the data analysis website Squawka, the numbers showed that the six chances created by Lokonga in his 90-minute performance were more than the combined five chances created perpetrated by the entire Newcastle XI.

The performance showed another side of the young Belgian’s footballing profile that has not fully been on display in his first season since his arrival to north London from the Brussels-based giants.

More importantly, his individual performance showed a level of maturity that was a sight to see despite his age after he was hardly influential against Liverpool last weekend. Indeed, Lokonga cut a frustrated figure last weekend in what was a poor outing from him, and his ability to bounce back and be among the top performers on the day proves that he has adjusted well to life in England.

Arsenal back in the hunt after bounce-back win

It is always difficult to bounce back after a drubbing of the level that Arsenal received at the hands of free-scoring Liverpool last weekend in their 4-0 loss at Anfield, but the Gunners showed maturity as they put in a consummate performance at the Emirates.

The 2-0 win against Newcastle in front of the home support was just what the doctor ordered after the humbling defeat last weekend and the kids were in the thick of the action once more as both Bukayo Saka and second-half substitute Gabriel Martinelli each found the back of the net to secure all three points.

Another three points in the bag put Arsenal well and truly back in the hunt and level on points (23) with high-flying West Ham who still has to clash with Manchester City tomorrow.

Despite the youthful nature of the Gunners squad under Mikel Arteta, they are currently defying last-seasons critics and putting themselves in a good position for a surprise finish in the European places come the end of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.
