Arsenal looking at Gent’s Jonathan David as potential Aubameyang replacement – Goal

Aubameyang & Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is by far and away Arsenal’s biggest goalscoring threat.

In his first full season with the North London outfit, Aubameyang would clinch the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot.

The former Borussia Dortmund standout has had a similarly prosperous 2019/20 campaign, in which he has, so far, scored 17 and assisted one in 25 league ties.

However, Aubameyang’s current Arsenal deal is set to expire in 2021 and a number of European heavyweights such as FC Barcelona and Inter Milan have been linked with him this term.

It was then reported by the Mirror that Arsenal were ready to try and relaunch contract negotiations with Aubameyang after their main hitman put contract talks on hold last autumn because he was frustrated at the club, and is desperate to play in the Champions League.

But with Arsenal looking set to miss out on CL football once again this season, will Aubameyang want to stick around this summer?

Arsenal eyeing David as potential replacement

It appears Arsenal aren’t so sure of that as they look to be making contingency plans for a possible Aubameyang exit.

According to Goal, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Gent forward Jonathan David as they prepare for the possibility of losing at least one of their two main strikers in the upcoming window.

As already mentioned, Aubameyang’s current deal runs out in 2021 whilst Alexandre Lacazette is approaching the final two years of his deal.

So, according to Goal, Arsenal’s hierarchy are aware that big decisions will have to be made at the end of the season regarding the two forwards. Both player’s contract talks are said to have been on hold for months.

The report from Goal then states that David is high on Arsenal’s list of potential centre-forward replacements.

The 20-year-old has scored a very impressive 18 goals in 26 league ties this campaign.

And in terms of a fee for David, Goal claims a sum of around £17.5m could be enough to land the Genk hitman.
