Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu explains why Premier League is difficult for Japanese players

Tomiyasu debuts vs Norwich

Arsenal would face off with Norwich City on Saturday afternoon in a Premier League clash.

The tie was of huge importance to both sides, who were both still searching for their first points of the PL campaign.

Arsenal headed into the tie having failed to score a single league goal in their previous three league outings, losing to Brentford, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Norwich had also fallen to defeat in their opening three Premier League ties of 2021/22, but they had at least scored one goal vs Leicester.

As a result, both sides were no doubt desperate to pick up a much-needed win at the Emirates.

In the end, though, it would be Arsenal who came out on top. The Gunners dominated the clash and ended up having 30 shots, only seven of which were on target.

But they would eventually find the breakthrough 66 minutes in via Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to pick up a 1-0 win

Takehiro Tomiyasu would make his Arsenal debut over the weekend. The defender slotted straight in at right-back and enjoyed a fairly decent debut.

Why the Premier League is difficult for Japanese stars

Tomiyasu would then earn praise from both Mikel Arteta and Arsenal legend Ian Wright following his debut.

Now, after being handed his first Premier League experience, Tomiyasu has explained why the English top-flight is difficult for Japanese players.

At present, there are just two Japanese players in the PL, Tomiyasu and Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino.

And this may have something to do with the physical nature of the league, with Tomiyasu citing this is as the reason why it is so difficult for Japanese players:

“In this moment, there are 2 Japanese players including me. Me and Minamino, playing in Liverpool. Playing in the Premier League is difficult for Japanese players because the Premier League is so physical, but I think I’m ready.”
