AC Milan’s Donnarumma the latest goalkeeper linked with Chelsea

Speculation stemming from the Italian media today suggests that Chelsea are expressing an interest in AC Milan star Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Kepa struggling

One of the major talking points surrounding Chelsea in the weeks leading up to the COVID-19 outbreak had been the situation between the posts at Stamford Bridge.

Until recently, Spanish shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga had stood as the Blues’ undisputed first-choice.

Having begun to justify his hefty price-tag with a string of superb displays towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, Kepa was expected to kick on and stake his claim as one of world football’s finest goalkeepers this season.

However, this has since proven far from the case.

The 25-year-old had, particularly over recent months, slipped into a major slump, eventually resulting in Kepa losing his place in Chelsea’s starting XI to veteran Willy Caballero.

In fact, as of January, the former Athletic Bilbao man was the owner of the worst save percentage of any Premier League goalkeeper this season.

Kepa out/Donnarumma in?

Kepa’s struggles, meanwhile, have even seen speculation begin to circulate that he could be on the move this summer.

A report from Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV last month claimed that Chelsea had tabled an offer of €30 million, along with Kepa, to Atletico Madrid for Jan Oblak.

And, though nothing has since come of such rumours, the latest media speculation across Europe would certainly appear to suggest that Frank Lampard and co. are ready to part with Kepa.

As outlined above, meanwhile, on the back of further links to the likes of Burnley’s Nick Pope and Udinese standout Juan Musso, yet another shot-stopper has today been tipped to replace Kepa between the posts at Stamford Bridge next season.

The individual in question? Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italian international Donnarumma, despite having been plying his trade at the top level of the game for what feels like a decade, is still only 21 years of age.

As such, taking into account both the wealth of experience and room for growth possessed by the youngster, Lampard is said to view Donnarumma as the ‘perfect signing’.

Italian outlet Calciomercato (via Goal) report that this could well see the Blues swoop for the AC Milan star in the summer, though the Rossoneri are expected to demand at least €60 million for their long-time no.1.
