Aaron Wan-Bissaka names toughest opponent he has faced whilst at Man United

Wan-Bissaka impressing with Man United

Manchester United spent big on their backline last summer.

As well as signing Harry Maguire in a world-record deal, the Red Devils also forked out £50m for then-Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

£50m for a young defender with just one full season of top-flight football under his belt may have seemed a bit much to some.

But Man United were in desperate need of a new right-back, and the money that they splashed out on AWB looks to have been a solid investment, based on what we have seen from the Englishman so far.

Along with Maguire, the 22-year-old has helped to improve United’s backline a fair bit, with Wan-Bissaka’s tackling ability a particular strength of the full-back.

Granted, AWB isn’t the best offensively, but he has shown signs of improvement in that area over the last six months or so.

AWB names his toughest opponent

So far in his fairly short stint at United, Wan-Bissaka has racked up 34 appearances across all competitions.

And the full-back has now, answering a fan’s question, named the toughest opponent he has faced during his time at Man United.

The man whom Wan-Bissaka picked was fellow countryman Raheem Sterling:

“I’d say Raheem Sterling; those are the battles I’ve enjoyed the most.

“He keeps going, just keeps on coming at you. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t get past you in one challenge, he keeps coming back for more every time. That’s what I like.”

Man United and Manchester City have faced off four times this term, with Wan-Bissaka and Sterling starting all four ties.

It is the United stopper who has won the battle between the pair so far, as Man United would emerge victorious from three of these four meetings, with Sterling having failed to score or assist in any.

Wan-Bissaka is also pleased with his own displays against City in the Premier League this campaign:

“I’ve been happy with my performances in both league derbies and the results both times were just what we needed. The second one was just before lockdown, and that was an incredible afternoon. We were prepared for that game and we showed that as a team on the pitch. When Scott scored the second goal, the whole stadium just went off and you could see what it meant to everyone.”
