ATHENS, Greece – Authorities say a 15-year-old migrant has been found suffocated on a yacht that carried 59 others to a Greek island.
The death was discovered when a patrol boat belonging to Frontex, the European border management force, stopped a yacht for inspection off the Greek island of Simi, close to the Turkish coast. The yacht tried to evade inspection and at some point rammed the patrol boat, slightly injuring a Greek coast guard officer.
The Greek coast guard said 60 migrants were found on the boat, including the dead youngster. Their nationalities have not yet been determined.
The United Nations’ refugee agency announced Friday that 200,000 refugees, the vast majority from Syria and Afghanistan, have entered Greece in 2015, more than four times the entire 2014 figure.
