BUCHAREST, Romania – A top Romanian prosecutor has been detained for questioning about a payment that the government made to compensate a citizen whose property had been seized by the nation’s ruling communists in the 1940s.
The prosecutor, Alina Bica, was a member of a Justice Ministry committee that allegedly overvalued the price of the real estate and paid too much compensation to the former owner in 2011.

Bica was detained on Thursday night for 24 hours on suspicion of abusing her government position at that time.
Bica no longer works on that Justice Ministry committee, and she currently is the chief prosecutor of a government department investigating organized crime and terrorism.
