Adnan Januzaj proved Manchester United’s matchwinner at Aston Villa but still received criticism from manager Louis van Gaal for giving the ball away too much.
The 20-year-old forward, a loan target for Sunderland, hit the only goal in a 1-0 win to send United top of the table with maximum points despite underwhelming displays.
Van Gaal praised Januzaj for scoring a ‘wonderful’ goal, his first since April 2014, but added: ‘All the other aspects of football you have to show also.

Adnan Januzaj scored the winning goal for Manchester United at Aston Villa on Friday night

Januzaj, a loan target for Sunderland, hit the only goal in a 1-0 win to send United top of the Premier League

Louis van Gaal still managed to criticise Januzaj following the win despite his goal against Villa
‘I am fairly pleased because of his goal we have won, but there has to be more than only scoring a goal.’
Van Gaal claimed Januzaj wasted possession frequently. ‘We had too many unnecessary ball losses,’ he said. ‘That was not only Adnan Januzaj, but also Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney, a lot of players I can say. We have to improve that.’

Januzaj’s first-half goal, following a sublime pass by Juan Mata, took a deflection off Ciaran Clark to beat Brad Guzan in the Villa goal.
Januzaj was replaced on 60 minutes but Van Gaal said this was down to fitness issues after limited playing time in pre-season. Depay had a clear chance to make the game safe but shot wide when put clean through by Mata.
‘After the subs, we controlled the game,’ insisted Van Gaal. ‘We could have scored more goals, maybe we should have, and because of that there is always tension until the end. But I am very pleased.’
