Jamie Carragher has questioned Yaya Toure’s effort levels after the midfielder’s ‘unbelievably selfish’ performance in Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal on Monday night.
The Ivory Coast international scored a stunning goal for City on 82 minutes after the Gunners had gone 2-0 up and improved dramatically on an underwhelming first-half display.
Carragher, speaking in his role as a pundit for Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, pulled no punches in his analysis and claimed Toure’s burst into life was too little too late.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher questioned the Ivory Coast midfielder’s attitude in his analysis

Carragher accused Toure of prioritising personal glory and only trying when it suited him
‘I think it’s a joke to be honest,’ the former Liverpool defender said. ‘And it wound me up that he got the goal in the end and commentary said that he ran the game for the last 20 minutes.’
Carragher added: ‘It’s like he comes alive. It’s like ‘oh we can get a goal, there’s a chance at a bit of glory and being involved.’
‘But they lost the game tonight and one of the reasons is the space (Mesut) Ozil had behind him. It’s nothing new, I’m not saying anything we haven’t said for the last two or three years.
‘You’re talking about one of your major players, one of your leaders in a dressing room; that’s unbelievably selfish that, the way he’s played tonight.’
On the slowness of Toure’s defensive game, Carragher sniped: ‘The only thing he needed was a walking stick and an overcoat.’
Monday night’s result sees both teams remain second and third place in the Premier League table, with the north Londoners trailing leaders Leicester by two points. City, meanwhile, are six off the pace.
