England’s World Cup failures should be preparing for a Twickenham quarter-final but many will have to warm their club benches on Friday night having been dumped out of the tournament.

A trio of Harlequins, Joe Marler, Nick Easter and Mike Brown, have been selected as replacements for the fixture against Wasps at the Stoop, in the shadows of Twickenham where Wales will be playing South Africa 20 hours later.

Chris Robshaw and Danny Care, meanwhile, may be watching from the stands as Conor O’Shea has decided to give the pair an extra week off – Care due to a back spasm.

Newly promoted Worcester host Northampton Saints at Sixways, where Kieran Brookes will get a chance to make a claim for the English No 3 shirt come the Six Nations, as he starts at tight-head prop for the Saints.

Elsewhere there is a host of neglected English talent on show with Luther Burrell, Dylan Hartley and Matt Kvesic all playing for their clubs with a score to settle, having been left out of Stuart Lancaster’s 31-man England squad.
