Britain’s Menelik Watson has been dealt a cruel blow ahead of the new NFL season after rupturing his achilles tendon in a pre-season game on Sunday.
The Oakland Raiders offensive tackle limped off during their 30-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and he confirmed the news on his injury on Twitter.
Watson vowed to return stronger but is likely to be out of action for four to six months.

He tweeted: ‘Ruptured Achilles’ tendon… I Will be back stronger than ever that’s a promise. Main thing is supporting the team right now. #RaiderNation’
Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio added: ‘That’s a tough break for us. It’s really unfortunate. He was having a great camp for us.’

Watson was born in Manchester before moving to the United States to pursue a career in American football.
He played his college football for Florida State and was drafted in the second round by the Raiders since 2013.
Watson has played 17 games in his first two seasons in the NFL, 12 as a starter.
