Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood says the club’s woeful form this season has made it hard for him to watch Match of the Day with his son.

The club seems destined to be relegated from the Premier League after a campaign which has so far only seen Villa win three times out of 26 matches.

Villa were thrashed 6-0 by Liverpool at Villa Park in their last game, leaving eight points from safety with 12 matches left to play.

It seems certain that Villa, who have been an ever-present since the formation of the Premier League, will be plying their trade in the Championship next season.

‘My son Frankie is football mad, he always wants to watch Match of the Day and it’s difficult to watch it with him sometimes,’ Westwood said to The Telegraph

‘We’ve been called the worst team in Premier League history and, of course, that does hurt.

‘The facts are we’re not, we’ve got enough points to show that we’re not the worst, but it’s still not nice to hear.’

Westwood believes that sides find Villa Park, one of finest stadiums in the country, too pleasant to play when they arrive to encounter Remi Garde’s team.

‘It’s a lovely big pitch and we play nice football but maybe we need to start being ugly and doing it that way,’ Westwood said. ‘Maybe we need to make the grass longer or something, because it’s too easy for other teams.’

Villa are away to Stoke on Saturday in the Premier League. They are last in the table with 16 points.
