Alan Shearer pulled no punches when dissecting Newcastle United’s defeat by Leicester City as the Match of the Day pundit labelled his former club ‘woeful, embarrassing, hopeless and inept’.

Shearer also mentioned a ‘five-letter word’ that had been thrown around in Newcastle but could not reveal it on television, alluding to the fact that ‘s****’ was trending on Twitter during their defeat.

Jamie Vardy stole the headlines by scoring in his 10th consecutive game for Leicester as Newcastle were left fourth bottom in the Barclays Premier League by the 3-0 loss.

‘There was one word – a five-letter word – that was trending in Newcastle today about their performance,’ Shearer said.

‘I can’t use it here for obvious reasons. Words that I can use? Woeful, embarrassing, hopeless, inept.

‘There was just a lack of effort, passion and commitment. You can put it a poor performance but you cannot accept a lack of effort like the Newcastle players did.

‘I watched them come out in the second half and they were walking around. There was just no commitment to the game. It is just not acceptable.’

The win moved Leicester top of the table after 13 games but they will be tested in the next month with fixtures to come against Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
