Zinedine Zidane has backed the appointment of Rafa Benitez as Real Madrid manager but says that only reclaiming the La Liga title will suffice in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benitez signed a three-year contract to replace Carlo Ancelotti and Zidane is sure he knows what is expected of him because the Spaniard is returning to the club he started his coaching career at 20 years ago.

‘The club has selected Benitez and it’s a good decision,’ Zidane said to Marca. ‘You need to respect that decision. Benitez is a good choice, but what counts are results.

‘He knows the place well. He knows the challenge he has ahead. Only winning titles is good enough.’

Benitez has won La Liga twice before as manager of Valencia.

Madrid have not finished at the summit of the Spanish league since Jose Mourinho was at the club in 2012.

Zidane’s name was mentioned to be in the running to replace Ancelotti but the former Galactico wanted to remain as boss of Real Madrid Castilla while he hones his skills.

‘It’s been a good experience,’ Zidane said. ‘It’s a completely different job from working with the first team. We’re looking to get promoted.

‘I decided to stay because Real Madrid is an amazing place and I want to contribute something important to this club.’
