Rutherford salvages bronze with last jump

Greg Rutherford’s reign as Olympic long jump champion came to an end as the Briton won bronze in Rio, with the USA’s Jeff Henderson taking gold.

Rutherford was nearly pushed out of the top three but Jarrion Lawson’s hand brushed the sand on what would have been a medal-winning final jump.

Henderson, 27, won gold by leaping 8.38m with his last attempt.

South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga won the silver medal with 8.37m, while Rutherford took bronze with 8.29m.

An emotional Rutherford said: “I’m gutted. I came here to win but couldn’t quite get it together.

“I am very frustrated with a jump they called a foul but it wasn’t, and it wasn’t until the end they changed that.

“But equally I didn’t jump far enough and that’s difficult. I am pleased I went from fourth back into a medal position but bronze is not good enough for me.

“I am very disappointed.”

Rutherford’s bronze, allied to Jessica Ennis-Hill’s silver in the heptathlon, meant British hopes of a repeat of London 2012’s Super Saturday. were not realised, though Mo Farah did retain his 10,000m title.

Meanwhile, Matthew Hudson-Smith booked his place in the 400m final with a perfectly timed run from lane eight, finishing strongly down the home straight to clock 44.48 and a new personal best.

But neither Michael Rimmer nor Ireland’s Mark English could make the 800m final, while Luke Cutts went out in pole vault qualifying.

Chief sports writer Tom Fordyce in Rio:

“Rutherford might have lost his Olympic title, but in one of the great long jump finals – in terms of drama if not distance – he proved his immense championship character with that last-round leap.

“Just two centimetres down on the jump that won his gold in London, and just 10cm from another gold, having had his preparation badly disrupted by the whiplash injury he suffered at the Birmingham Diamond League.”
