Tottenham are primed to make a £16million offer for Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama.

The Kenya international has been identified by Mauricio Pochettino as the player he wants to protect his defence and initial moves are underway to get a deal done.

The 24-year-old Wanyama has two years left on contract at Southampton but is not leaning towards agreeing an extension.

He was a regular fixture under Pochettino and holds the Argentine in high esteem but is known to have been upset by Southampton boss Ronald Koeman dropping him to bench on occasion last year.

Southampton are wary of allowing players to run contracts down after losing Nathaniel Clyne in similar circumstances to Liverpool earlier this summer.
