Manchester United want to add a winger to their squad in January as Louis van Gaal looks to solve their goalscoring problems.

Lazio’s Felipe Anderson, Sadio Mane at Southampton, Riyad Mahrez at Leicester and Anwar El Ghazi of Ajax are among the names to have been discussed.

Chief scout Jim Lawlor travelled to Rosenborg to watch their Europa League clash with Lazio last Thursday but Anderson did not play.

The 22-year-old Brazilian suffered a poor start to the season but has picked up his form in recent weeks. United also watched Leicester against Watford at the weekend, though face both in the coming weeks.

Ideally, United would like Gareth Bale from Real Madrid but the Wales international is happy in Madrid and firmly ensconced in the plans of president Florentino Perez.

Madrid already expect a bid from Paris Saint-Germain for Cristiano Ronaldo next summer and don’t intend to sell Bale.

Some United staff had hoped Antonio Valencia would be given a chance in his favoured role but Van Gaal is intent on adding a fresh face.

He said: ‘I have said already in my first year many times we need speed and creativity on the wings.

‘You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard and he is not the most speedy winger in the world and Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world.

‘So we must first finish that problem and then we can see how we have to play and how we are in balance with playing with speedy wingers.’

Everton retain an interest in Leeds United right back Sam Byram also but are refusing to pay the £6m asking price.
