He said: ‘It’s impossible to put it into words but I’ll try. It is a dream, it’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was very young. it’s an incredible feeling and very proud of all my family to get me here today and just to be representing.

‘Every moment I’ve had in the car has been special, in its own way but for sure winning the race in Austin and sealing the championship, that for me was one of the most special races. Because it started out wet, I was in the lead, I was behind, we touched at the first corner and different things but that for me was one of my favourites.

‘There’s a huge sense of pride, of course. Particularly with this last step, coming to Mercedes was solely my decision, I didn’t have anyone else impacting that decision, I wanted to make that decision myself and everyone else said it was the worse thing I could have ever done.

‘Now I have two more world championships under my belt and I’m very proud of that, and with how I’ve driven.

‘Ultimately, my goal is to be the best I can be and you can’t be at your best every single day but more often than not, I’ve been on it.’
