GB men start rugby sevens with comfortable win over Kenya

Great Britain beat Kenya 31-7 in their first Olympic men’s rugby sevens match – before Japan shocked New Zealand.

Dan Bibby crossed either side of the break for Britain in the Pool C opener, after Dan Norton opened the scoring in the first two minutes.

Phil Burgess and Mark Bennett also touched down, with captain Tom Mitchell adding three conversions.

GB play next at 21:00 BST against Japan, who upset joint favourites New Zealand 14-12 in a thrilling contest.

Sir Clive Woodward, who coached England to victory in the XV-a-side World Cup in 2003, told BBC Sport: “What an amazing, amazing turn up.

“How good for the Olympic sevens. Japan thoroughly deserved to win that contest and New Zealand looked absolutely shell-shocked.”

Britain face New Zealand at 16:30 on Wednesday in the final match in Pool C.

The top two sides in each of the three pools go into the quarter-finals, plus the two best third-placed teams.
