He told Canal+ Sport: ‘I stopped for lack of offers and also to stay with my children. I had gone to Sunderland alone, so it made me think.’

The full-back started his career at Rennes in 1998 but spent most of his time with Lyon where he won five Ligue 1 titles and the Coupe de France twice during a 10-year spell at the Stade Gerland.

He also won the Coppa Italia during a stint with Napoli before arriving at the Stadium of Light last year.

Reveillere made 20 appearances for France and was included in the squads for the 2010 World Cup as well as Euro 2012.

The Black Cats have continued to struggle in his absence – losing 1-0 to Southampton at the weekend to lie second bottom in the Premier League table with just one win (against rivals Newcastle) from their opening 12 games.

New manager Sam Allardyce is keen to bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window with the Sunderland Echo linking the club with another French full-back French left-back Arthur Masuaku.

The Olympiakos full-back is reportedly on Sunderland’s shortlist after Black Cats scouts watched the 22-year-old in action during the Greek club’s Champions League win over Dynamo Zagreb last week.
